5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Wellness Journey
If someone had told me two years ago that I would be down nearly 100 pounds, reversing liver fibrosis, and feeling better than I did in my twenties… I wouldn’t have believed them. I was a nurse who knew the clinical side of medicine, but I hadn’t fully grasped what it meant to take ownership of my health. Not until I was told I had 20 years left to live if I didn’t change.
What I’ve learned since then has reshaped my career, my family life, and my mission. If you’re thinking about taking your health seriously—whether you’re just starting or already on the path—here are five things I wish someone had told me from the start.
1. You Don’t Have to Be “Sick Enough” to Take Action
I waited too long because I didn’t think I was “that bad.” I thought as long as I could function, I was doing fine. The truth? Most health problems don’t show up in obvious ways until it’s too late. You don’t need a diagnosis to start paying attention. Prevention is power.
2. The System Is Built to Manage, Not to Heal
As a nurse, I saw it every day—people patched up, sent home, and brought right back weeks later. We treat symptoms, not causes. And when you live in that system long enough, you start to think that’s all there is. It’s not. Real healing doesn’t come in a prescription bottle—it starts with understanding your body, your habits, and your root issues.
3. Small Changes Compound Fast
When I started, I didn’t join a gym or do some radical cleanse. I just changed how I ate and started walking. That’s it. And it worked. Once I saw the momentum, I added more. This journey isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight to change everything long-term.
4. Mindset Is Everything
There were days I wanted to quit. Days I doubted myself. But I realized I had two choices: change nothing and stay on the path I was on—or take the uncomfortable road that leads to better outcomes. Your mindset has to shift from “I hope this works” to “This is who I’m becoming.”
5. You’re Not Meant to Do It Alone
If you’re anything like me, you’ve tried the DIY route. Googled everything. Listened to every podcast. But real change clicked when I had accountability, clarity, and a strategy. That’s why I started Veritas Wellness—not to hand out cookie-cutter advice, but to help people create a plan that works for them, with someone in their corner.
If you’re on the fence about making changes, I hope this gave you the push you need. Your body wants to heal. Your life can feel better. And you don’t have to wait for a wake-up call like I did.
Start now. Take the next step. And remember—you don’t have to do it alone.
